HEAR for High School Teachers
We Know the Threat of High School Bullying
As a high school teacher, you know that your classroom is not merely a collection of students, but an often complex mini-community of young, growing adolescents with widely diverse origins, cultures and needs. You know that delivering the highest quality education possible to this community is the ultimate goal, and realize that the first step in reaching that goal is to ensure a safe learning environment for all – an environment devoid of threats, insecurities and other obstacles to active student engagement.
Bullying challenges the stability of that environment. Regardless of whether this dangerous and destructive behavior occurs in the classroom itself, in the hallways or off school grounds, the impact of bullying is clear. According to our HEAR for High Schools student surveys, 67% of students have witnessed bullying within the past school year. And when students are more worried about their personal safety and well-being than their coursework, your ability to teach is frustratingly compromised.
We Know Your Needs
At Project HEAR, we understand the challenges you face and the critical role you play in recognizing incidences of bullying and dealing directly with the inevitable results. As educators ourselves, we know that you are often the first to notice the tension, exclusion and isolation that victims of bullying exhibit. And you are typically the first ones to witness bullying in your classroom, hallways and other common areas – more so than counselors and other school administrators, you are on the front lines of the bullying battle.
We also know that high school students face a different set of pressures and stresses than their middle or elementary school counterparts. We understand the unique challenges faced by your students’ age group – the stresses brought on by budding romantic relationships, cultural diversities, peer pressures, anxieties about upcoming graduation, etc. We know first-hand that dealing with these all-too-prevalent issues can lead to dangerous behavior patterns that affect your classroom and the school as a whole. And we know the extent to which cyber bullying has come to dominate the high school bullying scene, often emerging as the primary tactic used by this always-connected age group.
A Proactive Solution
HEAR for High Schools was developed with the specific needs of high school teachers and their unique student audience in mind. The program is founded on extensive academic research conducted by nationally renowned subject matter experts at Making Caring Common, a project of the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and aligned with Common Core State Standards. Participation in the HEAR for High Schools program gives your students the opportunity to reflect on real-life bullying situations and help brainstorm viable solutions. By enabling structured discussions and personal reflection opportunities on what it is to behave in a respectful and inclusive manner, key messages in support of bullying prevention and active engagement can take hold.
